IBM Acquires Database Specialist Compose

IBM today announced that it has acquired cloud database startup Compose. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Compose, formerly known as MongoHQ, offers MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL and other popular open source databases. Big Blue has acquired database specialist Compose as part of its expansion plan of its cloud computing business. 

Under the deal, Compose will be integrated into IBM Cloud Data Services business. Compose will continue to operate and that its current users or customers will not be affected by the deal between the two companies.

Founded in 2010 and based in San Mateo, California, Compose is basically a Database as a Service (DBaaS) provider that offers auto-scaling, production-ready databases to help software development teams deploy database services quickly. It supports five popular open sources databases, which include MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL and RethinkDB. The company's platform provides constant database monitoring and management by DBaaS and DevOps experts, and features containerized DBaaS platform technology.

Its a smart move for IBM because this deal brings over 3500 active customers that span multiple industries- retail, IoT, education, marketing and ecommerce. It also brings a broad range of developers ranging from startups to big enterprise development teams. 

Compose has raised $6.4 million since it started in 2010, investors include Data Collective, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, SV Angel and Webb Investment Network.  IBM has been beefing up its cloud services, last year it acquired DBaaS provider Cloudant to boost IBM's big data and cloud computing portfolio.
