Red Hat Acquires Ansible To Boost Enterprise Software Portfolio

Open source vendor Red Hat this week announced that it has acquired privately-held IT automation and DevOps specialist Ansible, which develops agentless automation systems designed to simplify the automation of pure and across hybrid cloud environments. Red Hat has bought the company for a reported $100 million and will integrate Ansible’s automation technology into its Linux distribution portfolio across public, private and hybrid clouds.

The deal, which is expected to close in October if all conditions are met, has no impact on the company’s revenue for its third and fourth quarters in its 2016 year, which ends on February 29, 2016.

According to RedHat, the deal will strengthen the company’s position in the hybrid cloud management space. The decision to acquire Ansible does not mean that Red Hat will abandon its use of Puppet, an open source configuration management utility. RedHat plans to use Ansible’s technology to complement its existing IT management tools, which include CloudForms and Satellite. Ansible is currently one of the most popular open source automation projects on code collaboration site GitHub, with nearly 1,200 contributors. Ansible is a relatively recent player that’s made some big buzz in the configuration management space behind industry leaders Chef and Puppet. Ansible provides Red Hat an agile orchestration technology to compete with leaders Chef and Puppet, which also offers open source IT automation software.

Red Hat believes that the addition of Ansible will give its customers an access to expanded portfolio of IT automation and hybrid cloud solutions. Customers also will be able to streamline OpenStack installations and upgrades through a simplified orchestration and configuration process. This, in turn, would allow them to reduce the overall cost and complexity of deploying and managing cloud and legacy apps across their hybrid cloud infrastructures.

For Red Hat, the deal adds to the company’s track records of smart acquisition to beef up various aspects of its enterprise software portfolio. The company has made a number of significant acquisitions in the past few months. In the past year and a half, Red Hat has acquired FeedHenry for back-end mobile app integration, bought eNovance for greater OpenStack cloudscaling, and last InkTank to beef up its storage capabilities with open source Ceph platform.

Joe Fitzgerald, vice president of management at Red Hat, said in a statement that: “Ansible is a clear leader in IT automation and DevOps, and helps Red Hat take a significant step forward in our goal of creating frictionless IT.”

Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Santa Barbara, California, Ansible simplifies the way IT manage systems, applications and cloud infrastructures. It provides IT orchestration and hybrid cloud solutions for companies to deploy and manage their applications, systems and cloud infrastructures.
