Oracle Acquires Docker Container Startup StackEngine

Oracle, an enterprise software company, has acquired StackEngine, a Docker container operations management startup. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

StackEngine disclosed the acquisition news on its website, and also said that its entire team will be integrated and working with Oracle Public Cloud unit.

Oracle’s Public Cloud unit includes Software-as-a-service (SaaS), Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS). During the company’s second quarter call, Co-CEO Safra Catz said that the company’s SaaS and PaaS billing has grew 68 percent this quarter after climbing 70 percent in the previous quarter.

Docker containers hit center stage last year to become one of the IT industry’s hottest trends. It grows rapidly, with no sign of slowing down. Oracle, one of the largest software companies in the market, has seen the “Docker effect” and IT disruption, and has decided to follow the lead of major cloud market players Amazon and Microsoft, which already support the Docker container technology, Oracle seized the remaining opportunity and acquired StackEngine to catch up with rivals and to better compete in the rapidly evolving IT environment.

For Oracle, competing means offering a game-changing enterprise-grade application management solution, and if StackEngine can be integrated with Oracle Public Cloud to deliver the speed, security and resiliency it promises, then StackEngine's technology could be a strong selling point for Oracle Public Cloud business. It could also provide the company with “additional firepower” to wage war against big tech rivals and established players in the hotly contested DevOps service market.

Founded in 2014 and based in Austin, Texas, StackEngine helps developers and enterprises on their virtualization to containerization journey by by offering a modern, enterprise-grade application management. The startup offers an application management solution called Container Application Center, which provides an administrative console to automate and simplify container operations management. The startup described its flagship product Container Application Center, as way for enterprises “to transform from the costs and inefficiencies of virtualization to the flexibility, mobility and freedom of containerization.” Before the deal, StackEngine has received $4.5 million in funding over multiple investments round.

In addition to StackEngine acquisition, Oracle also announced plans to build a "next-generation technology campus" in Austin, Texas. A team of technical professionals will be employed on the next-generation technology campus, which is designed to attract top tech talent to boost Oracle’s employee base in that city and support it rapidly growing cloud business.

Founded in 1977 and headquartered in Redwood City, California, Oracle provides enterprise software and computer hardware products and services. It also develops and builds tools for database development, enterprise resource planning software (ERP), customer relationship management software (CRM), and supply chain management software or SCM.
