After years of rumors and speculations, Microsoft has finally acquired Xamarin, a mobile app development tool maker company. Xamarin provides a popular platform that enables developers to build mobile applications using C# and deliver native mobile app experiences on iOS, Android and Windows devices. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Microsoft is increasingly moving to open source space and multiplatform approach in its mobile strategy, and this Xamarin deal is in line with what the Redmond-based company are doing. Xamarin has built a strong business around the Microsoft .NET ecosystem of developers and a strong grip in the developer’s world.
Its a smart move for Microsoft because it brings a rich C#-based mobile development environment. Xamarin’s technology allows developers to write native apps for not just Windows platform, but also in IOS and Android platforms.
Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President at Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise Group, wrote in a blog post:
“With today’s acquisition announcement we will be taking this work much further to make our world class developer tools and services even better with deeper integration and enable seamless mobile app dev experiences,” and also added this: “The combination of Xamarin, Visual Studio, Visual Studio Team Services, and Azure delivers a complete mobile app dev solution that provides everything a developer needs to develop, test, deliver and instrument mobile apps for every device. We are really excited to see what you build with it.”
Microsoft has had a long partnership with Xamarin- working on Xamarin integration into Visual Studio, Microsoft Azure, Office 365 and the Microsoft Enterprise Mobility Suite
Founded in 2011 and based in San Francisco, Xamarin is a software company that provides development solutions to build and test native mobile apps, including Xamarin Platform (a piece of software that extends the C# programming language to write native apps for multiple platforms), Xamarin Test Cloud ( a way to test apps on real devices), Xamarin Insights (an analytics service), and Xamarin University (an online classes).. The company powers mobile development for more than 100 of the Fortune 500 companies and is a visionary in Gartner’s 2015 Magic Quadrant report for Mobile Application Development.
In addition, Xamarin also develops and maintains the Calabash open-source project for mobile acceptance testing. The company has more than 15,000 customers in 120 countries, including more than 100 of Fortune 500 companies. Customers include Alsaka Airlines, Bosch, Coca-Cola Bottling, Dow Jones, Honeywell, Thermo Fisher, Flipboard, GitHub, JetBlue, Kellogg’s, and Microsoft.
Xamarin has raised a $54 million in series C funding round in August 2014. Investors include Charles River Ventures, Floodgate, Ignition Partners, Insight Venture Partners, and Lead Edge Capital.
Microsoft officials plan to provide more details about its Xamarin integration plans in the future starting at Build conference next month.
